In the Belly

Recipient of the 2016 Great Performances ARTIST Fellowship Award

I know that Dad had a polaroid camera. I found it once in a box in the basement. It seems like he only took pictures of people. There’s a photograph of a mailman. A woman holding her son’s hand while they crossed the street. A homeless woman sitting on a bench. Kids laughing in the hallway at school. My mom. I wish I understood what they all had in common. I wish I knew what he was seeing. When I look at them, when I lay them all out next to each other and really look at them, I think…maybe he wanted to feel everything. He wanted to try feelings on like they were clothes or something and have a brief moment with each one.
